The experience of having a pet is similar to that of having a child. As they grow older, you nourish and adore them. They hold a special place in your heart, and any good pet “parent” would go to great lengths to ensure that they are healthy and happy.
Melissa Mullamphy and her family, who live in New York, were in this situation. After being diagnosed with Wobblers in 2018, their beloved dog Grizzy lost his ability to walk. This is their tale.

Mullamphy told The Dodo that she knew when she first saw Grizzy, a large dog who weighed 150 pounds at the time, that he would get along swimmingly with her son Luke.
Luke and Grizzy, unsurprisingly, quickly became best friends. With Grizzy, he and the rest of the family would do everything together. They went outside to play after watching TV. For the most part, he was inseparable from his family. Grizzy and his family appeared to be doing well until one day they detected something was wrong with him.
The Diagnosis of Grizzy
Grizzy’s relatives observed that he was having difficulty walking. They decided to take him to the vet because they feared his muscles were weakening. After a comprehensive examination, the veterinarian discovered that Grizzy had Wobblers Syndrome, a neurological illness that affects the spine and neck of dogs.
It’s very prevalent in huge breed dogs, and Grizzy was one of them.
The vet stated that Grizzy will require surgery to correct the issue. Mullamphy told The Dodo that he guaranteed them that he would be able to walk out of the surgery room. They agreed to the procedure, but he was carried out on a gurney rather than walking. This alarmed his family, who believed he would permanently lose his ability to walk. Mullamphy was advised by the veterinarian that if he couldn’t walk after four months, he wouldn’t be able to walk again.
Some individuals outside the family believed Grizzy would devolve into a 160-pound dead weight. Melissa and the rest of the family, on the other hand, refused to believe it and resolved to do everything in their power to assist him.
Grizzy’s Therapy at Home
While he was at home, he was irritable. His limbs and the rest of his body were treated with therapeutic techniques. And Luke, in his own special manner, did his share to support him. He’d read him stories and the two of them would watch cartoons together. Every night, Grizzy would sleep in Luke’s bed. The entire family believed that their efforts would bear fruit.
Unfortunately, there were no signs that he was getting any better. The family was not discouraged, and they remained optimistic that he would be able to walk again.
Stay at Grizzy’s Rehab
Mullamphy revealed in her interview that the Mullamphys located a rehab center in July 2018 that had the required equipment and skills to help Grizzy. They drove him there and watched him receive therapy. The Mullamphys had to leave Grizzy at the rehab center for the duration of his treatment, which was a difficult experience for everyone involved.
He shared a kennel with other dogs, and his family could see how lonely and frustrated he was becoming. You could see he was missing his family.
A Wonderful Reunion
Every day, the workers encouraged Grizzy as his family came over to see how he was doing. They worked with him for months, and with each session, they saw his progress. He was finally able to return home with only three days until Christmas.
Grizzy could barely contain his enthusiasm as his family arrived. He almost dashed to the car before they could meet him. Everyone started crying because they were so delighted and excited to see how much he had improved. By pushing himself to improve, Grizzy was able to defy the odds. He felt the affection of his family and yearned to return home and spend the rest of his days with them.
Grizzy went early this year, according to Grizzy’s Instagram account, though the Mullamphys continue to update the account. Melissa Mullamphy was so moved by the experience that she decided to write a children’s book about it.
