When we adopt a dog, we are committed to it for life. But is it a promise to keep them with us through the good times and the bad, or to make the best decisions for them? They are usually not synonymous.
Roland—then known as Shorty—was available for adoption at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Conroe, Texas when he was two years old. Her entry photo features a large, stocky puppy with a blue bandana and smile. My shorts weigh 40 pounds which is a little heavy for his stature but it's not unhealthy. The photo was posted on social media in March 2019, the day after she entered the orphanage, and it caught the attention of many potential adopters. He had already walked out of the shelter shelter to his new home three days later.
We like to think that at that time everything will be happy forever - but life is complicated. When things became difficult for the Roland family, he went through with them. When the going gets tough, a loyal dog prefers to stay by the human side - but it may not be the best place for them.
Not much was known about Roland's life after his adoption in March 2019 until he appeared again at MCAS a year and a half later. Roland's humans explained in November 2020 that they had been homeless since his adoption and had been living in their cars. They couldn't feed their dog because they didn't have much money. They had to make a difficult decision:
Do they let their dog get hurt and get lost, or do they abandon him and never see him again?
Roland was in poor shape by the time they finally made a decision.
It can't be the same dog. The light and charming face were alike, but the miserable dog that the shelter workers saw had only skin and bones. Roland couldn't even raise his head and couldn't move. The poor kid had been struggling for a long time to get to this point.
Needs quick personal attention.
Jamie's Animal Rescue Roland from MCAS. The Jamie C. Foundation has been saving animals since the age of eleven and has dedicated her life to helping some of the toughest cases. She invests passionately in every animal she personally rescues from shelters, and while her heart aches for each animal, she is persistent.
Often choose those who have little chance of survival. This means that she is in a state of constant mourning, but her love and care often lead to a miracle of healing.
She spotted Roland's friend sleeping next to her at MCAS and soon greeted him. She told her fans and friends that she had another puppy who needed a miracle.
Jamie admitted that her previous owners had gone through a tragedy, but she couldn't understand how they could have stood idly by and watched a dog they claimed to love grow weak for so long.
Working with Roland takes a lot of patience. When Jimmy arrived, he had a physical condition score of 1 - the lowest imaginable. When we see a dog that has been starving for a long time, we want to give him as much food as he wants, but Jimmy realizes that his weak body can't take in so much too quickly.
Jimmy was giving Roland the attention he had missed for so long. Besides the unusual thinness, I discovered other indications of neglect.
Roland did a very exceptional job staying with a temporary host family two days later on a short trip.
“I learned this morning that he decided he was tired of lying flat...He got up alone today and took 20 steps to have fun before deciding to do so. 20 others didn't. After that, he was set aside and chose only to wait for dessert in the cupboard.
His baby steps revealed two things: He has a wonderful mind, and he loves food! He was put into a nursing home at the end of November, less than 30 days after he was delivered, and he's already gained 35 pounds. The ribs that were protruding from his sides are gone and he has a good layer of fat on his hips. Roland, who was too weak to lift his head unaided just a few weeks ago, is now enjoying tug of war. And wander the neighborhood with your host family.
Roland's growth was nothing short of miraculous, and his lovable personality never wavered despite the abuse he had been subjected to. Roland is now at a healthy weight and ready to start a forever family.
