Blind and Deaf Street Cat Yoda Triumphs with Love and Finds New Joyful Life

In a heartwarming story of resilience and care, Ceren Kiran Tatli and her husband have established themselves as passionate animal lovers, dedicating their time to looking after stray cats in their neighborhood in Turkey.

They strive to provide homes for as many cats as possible while keeping an eye out for any feline needing assistance.

During their routine strolls in 2015, they encountered a new street cat who presented a unique challenge — he was both blind and deaf.

Recalling the first sighting, Tatli told The Dodo, “We saw him navigating through the snow, seeking food and awkwardly avoiding confrontations with other cats and passing cars.”

Despite their efforts to help, the elusive cat always managed to slip away. Tatli’s attempts to approach him were met with fear, and eventually, he vanished altogether, leaving her wondering about his fate.

When the cat resurfaced months later, his condition had sadly deteriorated.

“In April 2022, he appeared again with a broken leg, seemingly drained of energy but still alive,” Tatli recounted.

Puzzled by how he managed to survive in a bustling neighborhood, the couple took him under their wing, named him Yoda, and promptly sought veterinary care.

Following multiple vet visits and surgery to remove one of his eyes, Yoda began a physical recovery, while his emotional healing proved more gradual.

Initially, Yoda was cautious in his new environment, having spent his life defending himself on the streets. He was wary of everything until he realized he was safe.

Tatli shared how he tread carefully at first, worried about unexpected attacks from other cats. Their other feline companions were also confused by Yoda, puzzled by his different behaviors, which led them to treat him warily.

However, one cat, Obi, warmed up to Yoda, understanding that Yoda’s perceived oddness was a result of his disabilities. With Obi’s companionship, Yoda relaxed, and gradually, his confidence grew.

A year into his adoption, Yoda embraced his new life, exploring his surroundings with joy and becoming the family’s spirited leader.

Today, Yoda, with a special bond with Obi, relishes in playtime, interpreted through gentle taps that signal it’s time for fun. Tatli also uses touch to communicate, with Yoda responding in kind.

He has shattered any misconceptions about his capabilities, demonstrating that his sensory impairments don’t hinder his vivacious personality.

“He exudes confidence and an independent spirit,” Tatli remarked, “Yoda assures us daily that he can do everything he desires without hesitation.”

Once living on the brink of survival, Yoda now thrives in a loving environment, free to roam and filled with happiness and security.

Tatli fondly adds, “Through knowing Yoda, we’ve embraced the simplicity and joy of life, seeing beyond his disabilities to focus on the vibrant spirit he brings to our lives.”
