Last month, an adventurous feline found an unexpected way off the streets of the Bronx when he took an impromptu ride in an Uber.
The story began when an Uber driver, who also volunteers with a local animal rescue group, Little Wanderers NYC, spotted a black and white cat sitting quietly on the road.
Seeing the feline in need, the driver decided to check on him. As soon as she opened the car door, the cat, later named Tux, hopped inside as if he already knew it was his ticket to a better life.
Tux settled comfortably on the dashboard, right behind the steering wheel, ready for his journey to safety.
Little Wanderers NYC shared the unusual hitchhiking tale with Love Meow, noting the cat’s eagerness to be rescued.
Upon closer inspection, the driver noticed that Tux, though friendly and willing to accept affection, had scars from past fights and an eye condition causing some discharge. Despite these signs of his tough street life, he was otherwise in good health.
The rescue group quickly arranged for Tux to see a veterinarian, who estimated him to be around two years old. They then placed him in a foster home, where he swiftly adapted to the comforts of indoor living.
With his eyes treated, Tux could now enjoy his new surroundings more clearly.
Tux found joy in simple pleasures, snuggling in his cozy cat bed and craving human affection. “He’s a big eater and an even bigger cuddle bug,” shared Dana, Tux’s foster mom.
Despite being new to indoor life, he quickly showed his love for head scratches and companionship.
Having lived as a stray, Tux initially struggled with food insecurity, often eating too quickly due to uncertainty about his next meal.
However, thanks to patience and care from his foster family, Tux is gradually learning to enjoy his food and getting more comfortable with household routines.
Tux, affectionately soaking up all the attention and soft nap spots he is now lavished with, dreams of finding a permanent family. “He can’t wait to have a forever home, and I’m excited to help him get there,” Dana expressed.
What began with patience and a little bit of luck on a Bronx roadway turned into a hopeful journey for Tux, who will never again worry about his next meal or a safe place to sleep.
